Alberta licenses have an expiration date of one to five years depending on their class and other factors. Your driver's license expires on the day of your date of birth (not the last day of your month of birth). The expiration date will appear on the back of your driver's license. The Government of Alberta has stopped mailing reminders about driver's licenses and vehicle registration.
It is your responsibility to renew your driver's license before the expiration date. After a license has expired for three years or more, you will need to retest. The first step will be a knowledge test. Once you pass the knowledge test, you can immediately take the basic road test.
If you pass, you will be granted a driver's license. If you had a full GDL Class 5 license before the expiration, you will be eligible for that class again. Glubish was joined by Derek MacMillan, vice president of the Alberta Registrar's Association, and Joel Ruff, chief operating officer of the Alberta Automobile Association, for Monday's announcement. You need proof of Alberta residency and documentation of Canadian citizenship or immigration if you are changing an out-of-province driver's license to an Alberta driver's license.
You must have had an Alberta driver's license for the last time and will need to provide proof of identification and residence in Alberta with your application. If you have a My Alberta digital ID, you can apply here to renew your driver's license and here to renew your ID card.
